Frequently Asked Questions
GENERAL
1. What is a Phoenix Award?
A Phoenix Award is the recognition of prestigious quality in a fanfiction written for the Percy Jackson and the Olympians fandom. It is bestowed upon writers with superior writing quality. If you’re familiar with the Veritas Award, it’s that; only renamed, because I’m not really associated with those guys anymore.
2. Why did you switch to Weebly?
Because Weebly is far less money-hogging; it’s easier to edit their CSS; and they have unlimited new pages. And I can do all the things I did on Webs on Weebly.
3. Hey, didn't you guys used to be the Veritas Awards?
Yup. But I changed the name to the Phoenix Awards, mainly because the Veritas have all but abandoned the fandom and I'm not associated with them anymore. I was also trying to reference the phoenix of myths, because it dies and is born anew from its own ashes, as that is what had happened to the old Veritas Awards.

NOMINATION
1. How are people notified if they’re nominated?
They get a form review which states that they were nominated, why they were nominated, and what category they were nominated in. The round's tentative dates are included.
2. Can I nominate myself?
If you want. It’s not like we’ll ever know. It’ll be on your conscience, though, and we can’t guarantee the story will go through.
3. How does the nominating process work?
Well, there’s a panel of judges for each round that man a category. Nominated stories are sent to them; if they accept the story, I put it on the site and review the person’s story to let them know. If it’s rejected, the story will go into my trashbin.
4. I nominated a story but it hasn’t shown up yet!
Go back and check the story. Is it:
5. How long can the stories be?
There’s no limit to a story length.
6. What do the judges do, exactly?
They read the nominations for me. They're the ones who decide which nominations go through and which don't.
7. Why did you change the amount of nominees that are accepted?
For one, to keep stress off of judges and myself. Lowering the bar to twelve nominees max per category helps with the quality of the stories and helps judges lower their workload. Once their twelve stories are chosen, that category is closed for nomination.
VOTING
1. How long is the voting period?
Usually two weeks. It depends on how quickly I can get judges.
2. Why can't I see the votes?
Because it reduces cheating. I actually wanted you guys to be able to see votes after you vote, but I couldn't find a way to make that work with the old polls. It might change later on, though.
3. Can I ask you for a hint on how my story's doing?
Sure thing. It will be vague, though, and it's not often permanent. You can PM me, Jace or Wintra if you want a hint.
4. The site's broken - it's not letting me vote! What's wrong?
Well, you're probably clicking on "Let's Vote," which is a fake link. The actual link that will take you to the voting page is hidden in the rules. To get it, you need to read the rules and then answer the question at the bottom of the page. For example, if Rule #1 is "Have Fun!" and the question is, "What is Rule #1?" you would click on "Have Fun" in order to get to the voting page. If it's still not working for you, e-mail me.
SITE
1. Does the theme have anything to do with the categories, stories that we need to nominate, etc?
Not at all! Themes are just for the pictures at the top of the page. Of course, the prompts over at the Phoenix Project, which is this award site's writing guru blog, often coincides with what the theme is.
2. Can I join your staff?
Sure, if you have something to contribute. You can become a graphic pro or a story judge, or you can just help out by nominating quality stories! There are specific guidelines for each, though. Check out the staff of fanmortals page for more details.
3. When are dates for the round posted?
Speculative dates are often in the home page paragraph, above the updates. I often try to stick to schedule, but those dates are not set in stone and may be changed if the situation calls for it.
4. How can I get e-mail notifications about the ongoings of Phoenix?
You can join Phoenix's e-mail list! Check out the bottom of about fanmortals for more details.
5. I changed my pen name, and I'd like your site to do the same. How do I get you guys to do this?
PM one of us. If you don't, your pen name will stay the same on the site as it's submitted.
PROJECT PHOENIX
1. What is Project Phoenix?
Project Phoenix is FM's writing guru blog. It includes writing challenges (called Cup of Tea), writing advice, and fic recommendations. Hopefully it'll expand over time. :)
2. Am I allowed to submit entries to old Project Phoenix prompts?
Of course! You'll only win anything if you submit to challenges on time, but please, feel free to submit replies to old responses. It boosts my self-esteem to impossibly high levels when someone does one of my writing challenges.

4. I nominated a story but it hasn’t shown up yet!
Go back and check the story. Is it:
- Lacking in grammatical correctness?
- Has it already been nominated or previously won in that category?
- Have I updated the noms yet?
- Have I said that I was taking the nom down for whatever reason?
- Did you fill out everything--and I do mean everything--on the form? Or was your reasons why it should win confusing?

There’s no limit to a story length.
